“And Jacob came to Shalem...”

(Gen. 33:18)

A question that’s posed up against Evangelical doctrine these days is: Whether the “Church became the real Israel”.

To me, this is a difficultly phrased question—what is Israel? The truth is that Israel is not uniformly Jewish, nor uniformly Christian. Israel, the Patriarch, was a “schizophrenic” type – he was a “Plain Man” (Gen. 25:27); yet, a deceiver (ibid., 27:35). He was Lame (ibid., 32:31), yet “came in wholeness” (ibid., 33:18).

The Ari had taught that it was that moment (Gen. 25:26), – when Jacob’s hand “took-hold on Esau’s heel” – that he, the little-brother, integrated into himself an aspect that could be dubbed as an “inner Edom”.

It’s for this reason that the word תם, “Plain” (Gen. 25:27), has the same count as עשו אבי אדום, “Esau the Father of the Edomites” (ibid., 36:43). That is why the word, – חלק (ibid., 27:11), “Smooth” – permutes into the Chaldee חקל, “Field”, used in the Targum to qualify Esau (ibid., 25:27).

It is then understood that of Jacob’s progeny, some reflected the aspect of Edom that’s within him.

Those would be the House of Joseph, which typifies Jesus; & yet also reflects within Jeroboam – who is, to this day, seen by the Jews to had been chosen to redeem Israel, from king Solomon’s idolatry & moral corruption.

This “Ephraimite Christ” should had hidden in Egypt (see 1 Kgs. 11), as did Jesus (see Matt. 2); where he would, then, sit to the “right hand” of the King.

The House of Judah typifies the Jewish aspect in Jacob/Jesus – while, the House of Joseph typifies the “Edomite” side in him.

It would be, then, understood, that the Church “inherits” the Edomite aspect in Jesus; and it is only when all Jews come in Shalem (Gen. 33:17-18), – and become Evangelised, – that the whole “House” of Israel is, then, built (ibid.).
